Natural Remedies for Chronic Inflammation

When a person is injured, the body reacts and sends the immune system into action. Blood cells rush to the area to fight possible infection by bacteria and viruses. There may be swelling and tenderness on the affected area, but the inflammation disappears upon healing.

In certain people, inflammation does not go away. This chronic condition confuses the immune system. As a result, it attacks healthy tissues. Chronic inflammation is usually associated with arthritis, allergies and lupus.

  1. Watch what you eat

Taking in too much salt can contribute to the occurrence of chronic inflammation. According to studies, excess salt can stimulate the immune system to take action even if there is no infection. So, the blood cells attack the healthy tissues.  Reduce salt intake to no more than 1 teaspoon a day.

To manage chronic inflammation, you should eat more anti-inflammatory foods. The Arthritis Foundation recommends eating fruits and vegetables, which are rich in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals that help to diminish inflammation. Eat whole foods instead of processed or packaged foods loaded with additives and ingredients that may harm the body.

Eat the right kind of fats. The polyunsaturated fats and omega-3 fatty acids found in fish, nuts, seeds and olive oil help to reduce inflammation. Fats from red meat, vegetable oils, lard and margarine do the opposite.

Spice up your foods. Certain spices do not just add flavor to the food you eat. They also help to reduce inflammation. Examples are ginger, turmeric, rosemary, cayenne, oregano and nutmeg. Studies show that taking high doses of the spices is necessary to effectively reduce inflammation. That is why many take herbal supplements like turmeric in capsule form.

Keep yourself moving to help reduce inflammation. Excess body weight can put pressure on your joints and internal organs thus increasing the risk for chronic diseases. Type 2 diabetes is a form of internal inflammation. By exercising, you lose weight and decrease the likelihood of inflammation.


  1. Manage your stress

Stress can have a big impact on your physical health. That’s because your body releases various hormones when under stress. According to studies, stress can also change how your immune system responds to inflammation. The less stress you have, the less inflammation your body needs to deal with.

A healthy way of managing stress is to have a massage. It feels good and benefits people with chronic inflammation. According to studies, the techniques of applying pressure on the body during massage help to reduce inflammation. The Arthritis Foundation mentions it as a potential therapy for joint pain, especially lower back pain.

Aside from following these natural remedies, there are cases when a person needs to consult a doctor. If the inflammation and joint pain become intolerable, the doctor may need to prescribe medications to relieve the symptoms. Don’t ignore the pain. Do something to keep it from growing worse.
