Consumers wanting to lose some pounds need to be careful when buying products. Even if a product is labeled “all natural” or “healthy,” you still need to make sure that it is indeed a good product. There are many products on the supermarket isle that are advertised as healthy, such as vegetable chips, granola and honey. But the truth is, these products are high in fat, sugar, sodium or calories.

The New Zealand Medical Journal published a list of foods compiled by researchers from New Zealand’s Otago University. The 49 foods included in the list are not only calorie-dense, they also lack the essential vitamins, minerals and other nutrients a healthy body needs. The intention of the researchers in producing this resource is to help dieters, especially those who are obese or overweight, to identify the foods that must be avoided to keep healthy and lose weight.

The following lists the 49 foods that’s not good for your health:


  1. Alcoholic beverages
  2. Cordial
  3. Energy drinks
  4. Flavored milk and milkshakes
  5. Fruit drinks (with the exception of tomato juice and also black currant juice without sugar)
  6. Hot chocolate drink, chocolate milk drink
  7. Powdered beverages
  8. Whole milk
  9. Sodas

Snack Foods and Dessert

  1. Biscuits
  2. Cakes
  3. Corn chips
  4. Chips (such as veggie chips)
  5. Doughnuts
  6. Canned fruits dipped in syrup
  7. Fruit rollups
  8. Fried potatoes/French fries
  9. Frozen yogurt
  10. High-fat crackers
  11. Ice cream
  12. Muesli/granola bars
  13. Muffins
  14. Pastries
  15. Pies
  16. Buttered popcorn
  17. Quiches
  18. Toasted muesli, granola, or any breakfast cereal that is high in sugar
  19. High-sugar yogurt
  20. Puddings


  1. Candies, which include lollipops
  2. Chocolates
  3. Condensed milk
  4. Sugar
  5. Honey
  6. Jam
  7. Marmalade
  8. Sugar (mixed into anything such as beverages, baked products, dishes and so on.)
