The Health Benefits of Drinking Coffee – Good News to Coffee Drinkers
If you like coffee, you don’t have to feel guilty every time you take a cup, because drinking coffee is actually good for you. According to a study published in the 2015 Journal of the National Cancer Institute, four or more cups of joe each day can lower your risk of melanoma.
There are many other studies that bring out the goodness of coffee. Coffee is rich in antioxidants, that is why it offers many health benefits. The caffeine content of coffee has been studied as well and shows that it helps to protect against a few health conditions.
The Health Benefits of Coffee
It’s surprising for many to know that coffee actually helps in reducing the risk of the following health conditions:
By drinking more coffee or green tea everyday, people lower their risk of stroke, as stated in a study published in the 2013 edition of the journal Stroke.
A study by the Harvard School of Public Health in 2014 revealed that drinking more than a cup of coffee per day for four years contributed to an 11% lower risk of type 2 diabetes. In addition, reducing the intake of coffee by about a cup each day led to a 17% increase in the risk of type 2 diabetes.
Do you like the smell of French roast? Well, the aroma of coffee is actually good for not just for waking you up in the morning but for relieving stress as well. A study on stressed, sleep-deprived rats showed that the aroma of coffee can trigger a particular gene activity that protects the nerve cells of these rats from damage due to stress.
According to a study published in the 2009 Journal of Conservative Dentistry, sipping black coffee can help you avoid tooth decay. Just make sure to avoid adding milk and sugar, which have an opposite effect.
For individuals with a family history of Parkinson’s disease, a study showed that drinking coffee reduces the risk of developing this neurological disease. Another study revealed that people who have more coffee or caffeine intake have lower risk of Parkinson’s disease.
A study published in the 2010 journal Cancer Causes & Control revealed that when women drink boiled Scandinavian coffee 4 times a day, they have a lesser risk of developing breast cancer than women who don’t.
The French press, Greek or Turkish varieties are similar to Scandinavian coffee. The potency of the coffee in slowing the growth of cancer cells may be traced to the greater amount of fatty acids it contained because it wasn’t filtered prior to consumption.
A study conducted in March 2015 revealed that 3 to 4 cups of coffee each day can reduce the risk of having clogged arteries. An earlier study tracked the status of 27,000 women who had a daily intake of 1 to 3 cups of coffee for 15 years and found that they have a reduced risk of dying from a cardiovascular disease.
Mouth and Throat Cancers
A study conducted in 2012 with published results in the American Journal of Epidemilogy showed that drinking more than 4 cups of caffeinated coffee per day can help protect coffee drinkers from throat and mouth cancers lowering the risk of death by half.
While the above discussion focused on the potential health benefits of drinking coffee, health experts still give this word of advice: Limit coffee consumption to a few 8-oz cups per day. Drinking too much coffee may cause unwanted effects, such as insomnia, stomach aches, nervousness, a racing heart, nausea and irritability. Also, it is recommended not to add more heavy cream and sugary syrups to your coffee. Doing so can increase the calories of your coffee drink and your risk for diabetes and stroke.
If you’re pregnant or have other health issues, seek your doctor’s advice regarding the safe quantity of coffee consumption for you. This helps to prevent the likely incidence of high blood sugar or high blood pressure.
