Sunshine Coast

Tucked into the southwest corner of mainland British Columbia, the Sunshine Coast is a 180 km (110 mile) stretch of paradise where the mossy rainforest drops from a sculpted shoreline into the Strait of Georgia, and winds itself northward beneath the Coast Mountains from Howe Sound to Desolation Sound. Named for its 2,400 hours of annual sunshine, the Sunshine Coast could also be known as the Scuba Coast, the Fishing Coast, the Serene Coast, the Wildlife Coast, the Arts & Culture Coast or the Health & Wellness Coast - reflecting the many attributes of the region.

This piece of paradise is just a 40 minute ferry ride; Simon enjoys the water activities and discovers the beautiful scenery which inspires the local artists.

Outdoor recreational activities abound on the Sunshine Coast: fishing includes five species of salmon, as well as rainbow, steelhead, kokanee and cutthroat trout; hiking ranges from wheelchair accessible routes to challenging, multi-day trails; golfing is superb, camping and wildlife viewing is diverse, and the choice of water activities such as kayaking, canoeing, warm-water swimming and scuba-diving are among the best in the country.

Populated by dream-seekers desiring the slower paced, coastal lifestyle, the Sunshine Coast is home to those who appreciate its beauty of outstanding marine parks and marshland bird sanctuaries, old growth forest and alpine peaks. It's a contemplative, quiet environment that has inspired a large, creative community of internationally known artists, musicians and artisans whose creations are showcased in local galleries and crafts stores, as well as in their own pottery, woodworking, and glass blowing studios up and down the coast. These creative elements, combined with a rich First Nations heritage, is responsible for numerous country fairs, art and craft events, and widely acclaimed writing and music festivals that draws visitors from all over the world, and help to make the Sunshine Coast one of the most exceptional regions of Canada.

While technically part of the mainland coast, the Sunshine Coast feels more like an island, reachable only by boat or air. BC Ferries sail regularly between Horseshoe Bay and Langdale, Earls Cove and Saltery Bay (Powell River) and between Powell River and Vancouver Island. Air connections from Vancouver to Sechelt and Powell River are frequent, and Malaspina Coach Lines operates passenger service from Vancouver to Powell River.
