SALTWATER

Whether you charter a boat or just drop a line into the ocean at the end of a dock, there are plenty of ways to enjoy saltwater fishing in Vancouver, Coast and Mountains. And with plenty of fish waiting to be found, your days of reminiscing about the "one that got away" are over!

Metro Vancouver

The protected waters in and around Metro Vancouver provide comfortable fishing in all weather. As Metro Vancouver is located immediately on the coast, most charter operators can have you outfitted and at your chosen destination within about 20 minutes. Popular spots include: Howe Sound, the West Vancouver shoreline, from Point Atkinson to the mouth of the Capilano River, the north arm of the Fraser River, the south side of Bowen Island and the Vancouver Harbour between Jericho Beach and a bell buoy at Point Grey. Several charter companies are available from Coal Harbour in downtown Vancouver, Granville Island, Richmond and Horseshoe Bay.

Sunshine Coast

Some of BC’s best salmon fishing is found in the Strait of Georgia, good news for anglers on the Sunshine Coast. The Sunshine Coast is riddles with fjords and inlets, and is major salmon migration route. In addition to salmon, visitors to the Sunshine Cast harvest oysters and catch prawns, Ling Cod, and Rockfish. There are many fishing charter operators, resorts and lodgings all ready to show you the season's best spots. Favourite spots include Texada and Harwood Islands near Powell River and Black Point near Saltery Bay. 

FRESHWATER

Steelhead. Salmon. Trout. These are just three of the feisty freshwater fighters that bring anglers to Vancouver, Coast and Mountains. With hundreds of rivers, streams and lakes, the region is a kind of Eden for freshwater anglers of every stripe, from the serious to those spending a pleasant Sunday afternoon with the kids at the dock. 

Metre Vancouver

In addition to the area’s close proximity to great ocean fishing, Metro Vancouver is also home to fantastic freshwater fishing. The lower Fraser River provides the opportunity to land any of the five salmon species plus Steelhead and the prehistoric White Sturgeon (catch & release only). From May to December, fisher folk are regularly spotted fishing from the shores of the Capilano River for Coho.

Mighty Fraser Country
 
The rivers and lakes in Mighty Fraser Country feature spectacular steelhead, salmon, sturgeon and trout fishing year round. Anglers find themselves choosing between easy access shore fishing and once in a lifetime fly-in fishing trips. Popular spots include: Pitt Lake, the largest freshwater tidal lake in North America; the Chilliwack River; Harrison Lake; the Fraser River; Kawakawa Lake and the Vedder River. Cultus Lake and Chilliwack Lake are good spots to fish for Rainbow trout. Prehistoric White Sturgeons are also at home in the rivers of Mighty Fraser Country. Sturgeons are the world's largest freshwater fish, and can weigh up to 360 kilograms (800 lbs). The best months to fish the powerful sturgeon are March to October, however sturgeon can be fished year round (catch and release only).

Sea to Sky Country

he opportunities for freshwater fishing in Sea to Sky Country are endless. Rivers, lakes and streams provide bull Trout (Dolly Varden), Rainbow Trout, Eastern Brook Trout, Sockeye Salmon and Kokanee to those casting a line. Home to some outstanding fishing lakes, anglers can enjoy fly-fishing our fly-out fishing and let guides show them the true fishing jewels of the region. Popular spots include: the Bridge River Valley and Tyaughton Lake, Squamish River with its four tributary rivers, the Elaho, the Ashlu, the Cheakamus and the Mamquam, Garibaldi Lake and Cheakamus Lake.

Sunshine Coast
 
Lakes provide most of the freshwater fishing on the Sunshine Coast, and Cutthroat Trout are the main species of fish. But don’t forget the creeks and streams for Coho action! Popular spots include: Ruby and Sakinaw Lakes, both easily accessible from Highway 101, Lois River and Powell River which gives you easy access to over 30 lakes.

Did you know?
Separate licenses are required for saltwater and freshwater fishing. Both types of licenses can be purchased at sporting goods stores and other fishing retailers as well as most Government Agents' offices throughout British Columbia. A specific license is required in National Parks and can be purchased at the Park Headquarters at each Park site.

Check with authorities for the current status of sport fish catches, as restrictions on specific species have been put in place to ensure that future generations will also enjoy some of the best fishing on earth.
