Rock Hounding

There are more than 600 varieties of rock to be found on the banks of the Fraser River, many of them semi-precious. The stretch between Bridal Falls and the Fraser Canyon in Mighty Fraser Country is especially good for rock hounding. Every year the force of the spring high water rearranges the bank rocks to reveal new material when the water goes down. Among the finds to be had are green and black nephrite, rhodonite or bicular jasper, dumortierite of the rare violet colour and much of the famous B.C. jade.

The Lillooet area is especially rich in jade. The Coquihalla River has yielded excellent nephrite, fossil and obsidian. Emory Creek and Ruby Creek, when followed up into the mountains, can have garnets of all sizes. Rock hounds are asked to respect private property and native reserve boundaries.
