Sunshine Coast Biking

Mountain: Sunshine Coast residents have taken to mountain biking with infectious enthusiasm. Many public schools offer supplemental education programs designed around mountain biking. There is even a certificate program at the local college in Sechelt for mountain biking operations management. Several excellent riding areas are available on the Sunshine Coast. Above Roberts Creek a series of forest service roads provide access to a network of expert freeride trails through second growth forest. These trails are among the finest purpose built freeride trails found anywhere thanks to a dedicated group of local riders. For beginner and intermediate riders there is a fun cross country trail network full of short looping trails found in the forest area directly behind the elementary school in Halfmoon Bay. This trail network extends to Trout Lake, a favourite spot for a cool dip on a hot summer day.

For those looking to improve their riding skills, the Sprockids Mountain Bike Park just off the highway between Gibsons and Langdale has a progressive range of obstacles to ride. Built by volunteers on reclaimed land, the bike park is popular for local youth programs and skills camps.

On the Upper Sunshine Coast you can find gorgeous loam trails that offer spectacular coastal views and rarely another rider in site. There are fun freeride trails off Duck Lake Road near Powell River and some epic cross country on the Bunster Hills Loop between Powell River and Lund.

Road: The Sunshine Coast attracts many who enjoy bicycle touring. If you have the stamina and lightweight gear required, travelling the length off the Sunshine Coast by bike can prove to be a rewarding challenge. Natural and historic sites such as tidal rapids at Skookumchuck Narrows or the stories of Smugglers Cove offer interesting side trips. There are campsites and numerous inns and Bed and Breakfasts to relax after a day's ride.

Leisure/Scenic: The 22 kilometre Angus Creek Bike Loop in Sechelt is a well marked route ideal for a leisurely afternoon ride. The ride has some challenging sections, but gorgeous views, peaceful forests and gurgling creeks reward you along the way. Porpoise Bay Provincial Park on Sechelt Inlet is a great starting point where you can camp or just stop for a swim or picnic after the ride.

The Inland Lake Trail on the Upper Sunshine Coast is a relaxing 13 kilometre (8 mi) day ride around the shoreline of a beautiful lake near Powell River. Several camping and picnic sites are located around the lake.
