Mighty Fraser Country Biking

Mountain: There are plenty of trails to choose from in Mighty Fraser Country that will challenge beginner, intermediate and advanced mountain bikers. Manning Park, located along Highway 3 approximately 60 km (40mi) east of Hope, is a great area for cross country riding. Explore this vast wilderness area at the north terminus of the jagged Cascade Mountain Range on either backcountry roads or narrow single track. Throughout Mighty Fraser Country phenomenal cross country trails can be found. Golden Ears Provincial Park near Maple Ridge is another great cross country ride with spectacular mountain views. Here you will find over 20 kilometres of trails ascending Alouette Mountain and the east side of Gold Creek Canyon.

If you are looking for something a bit more hair raising, you can check out some of the more notorious freeride trails in Mighty Fraser Country. Several areas have extensive trail networks for thrill seeking freeriders. Vedder and Sumas Mountains located on opposite sides of Highway 1 as you travel between Chilliwack and Abbotsford are home to a wide range of trails for advanced riders. The area known as The Woodlot in Maple Ridge is perhaps the most notorious and definitely not for the faint of heart.

Road: For the early settlers of the Fraser Valley, overland travel posed huge challenges due to the dense brush and endless bogs and marshes. Today much of this land has been transformed into productivee agricultural land as well as a network of roads to support the expanding populations of cities and towns in the valley. Although the area is growing rapidly it still maintains a rural feel. The area is home to a number of the province's top road racing events. Abbotsford, Langley, Maple Ridge and Mission host events for top athletes and citizen racers. For the weekend rider there are many excellent routes where you can log lots of miles on your bike along a quiet paved back road while enjoying clean air and inspiring scenery. The are surrounding Campbell Valley Regional Park in the south west corner of Langley has many paved back roads to explore. Nearby are a number of acclaimed wineries that can be included along the route you choose. Zero Avenue, a relatively quiet stretch of raod the follows the Canada/US border from Abbotsford to White Rock is representative of the rural countryside as well as a tribute to Canada's long friendly relations with the US to the south. Maple Ridge and Mission also have mile after mile of peaceful  rural roads to follow where it is just you, the farmer's field, majestic mountain scenery and perhaps the odd bald eagle soaring overhead...cycling paradise!

Leisure/Scenic: Riding along one of the many paths that follow the area's extensive system of river dikes is a relaxing way to spend an afternoon in Mighty Fraser Country. The Fraser River and many of its tributaries are lined by dikes to prevent potential flooding during periods of high runoff in the spring. The dikes provide panoramic views of the surrounding area and being practically level makes them ideal for riders of all ages and abilities. In early fall you may also be able to witness one of British Columbia's legendary salmon or steelhead runs as these large fish return to their origins to complete their important life cycle and perpetuate their species. The Poco Dike Trail and Alouette River Dive Trails are easily accessible from several points in Pitt Meadows and Maple Ridge. The Vedder and Sumas River dike trails near Chilliwack are other great rides to enjoy.

If you are looking for great scenery with flat surface biking and a touch of history, the Othello Tunnels near Hope are an amazing set of 4 railway tunnels. These tunnels range from 100 to 556 feet long and are along a short stretch of the old Kettle Valley Railway, which is now part of the Trans Canada Trail...a perfect outing for all ages.
