A New Year Resolution: The South Beach Diet

A New Year Resolution: The South Beach Diet

My New Year’s resolution is all about leading a healthy lifestyle; I plan to eat better, feel better and look better. After researching the countless diets and fitness programs out there, I discovered that the South Beach Diet is the most healthy diet plan for me.

What is the South Beach Diet?

The South Beach Diet is a diet plan created for everyone interested in making a lifestyle change, a change in eating habits. The South Beach Diet plan is available online or in bookstores; the South Beach online equips you with your own account, personal profile, tools (i.e. weight tracker, inch tracker, calendar, glucose tracker, shopping list, journal and projected meal choices for a day, a few days or a whole week), the SB Community, message boards, Beach Buddies and nutrition experts.

The South Beach Diet encompasses three phases: Phase 1, Phase 2 and Phase 3. Phase 1 lasts approximately two weeks, and it launches and expedites your weight loss with a collection of low-fat, 1200-1300 calorie, meals; absolutely no alcohol, breads, whole grains, cereals, oatmeal, rice, potatoes, peas and carrots, cookies, cakes, ice cream or fruit is allowed. Phase 2, on the other hand, reintroduces all the foods that Phase 1 avoids, but in moderation and/or occasionally; however, stick to whole grain breads only and avoid any foods made with white flour. Finally, once you reach Phase 3, you have adapted a lifestyle change in your food choices in which you incorporate in your daily meals that the South Beach Diet recommends.

Does the South Beach Diet Work?

Yes, it does! I am in my second week in Phase 1 and I have already lost 4.5 lbs. Believe it or not, I have stuck to the suggested meal plans, and I am not hungry. Not only am I making better choices in what I eat, but I am eating five times a day, and I am also learning how to prepare new and healthy recipes from SB’s diet menu. Hey, I’ve become a better cook, too.

If you want to increase your weight loss with the South Beach diet plan, you have to exercise. No worries, the SB experts don’t promote an intense fitness regime; instead, they suggest for you to walk daily for at least 30 minutes and/or find some activities you like to do like walking your dog, dancing, jogging or playing sports.

The South Beach Diet and a Personal Fitness Program Go Hand in Hand

Now that I’m disciplining my eating habits and curbing my appetite with the South Beach Diet, I am finally seeing results. Although I have been exercising regularly for at least three years, I have reached a plateau; I am not maintaining my weight goal; in fact, I am gaining weight. The South Beach Diet is teaching me to feed my body foods that are rich in vitamins and minerals, and foods that increase my energy and improve my physique.

You have to move your body to reach your weight loss and fitness goal. I strongly believe that my 2-3 times a week workout sessions with Mari Winsor Pilates and 2-3 times a week, 30-45 minute sessions of speed-walking and/or jogging contributed to my remarkable weight loss in my first week in Phase 1 of the South Beach Diet.

So, don’t just make a New Year’s resolution; follow through with it. If I can do it, you can do it, too. Besides, what have you got to lose? Weight? Precisely my point.
