How to Lower Your Risk for Type 2 Diabetes

Well, it is your choice. You should know, however, that when you eat too much sugar, you place yourself at a higher risk of having type 2 diabetes. This is a consequence of your lifestyle choice.

Your nutritional choices have a direct correlation with the chances of your developing type 2 diabetes. What you eat, not just sugar, will affect your health. For example, eating foods with saturated fats, trans fats and refined sugar will significantly increase your risk for type 2 diabetes. But if your diet is composed mostly of fresh fruits and vegetables and whole grains, you will be less likely to have type 2 diabetes.

 

Your sleep can also seriously impact your risk for diabetes. When you don’t get the right amount of sleep, you increase your risk for type 2 diabetes. So, be sure to have regular, quality sleep. Both teens and adults need at least 7 to 8 hours of good night sleep every night.

 

Are you overweight? You need to drop some weight if you want to lower your risk for diabetes. Studies show that 2 out of 3 male patients of diabetes have excess body fat. It’s considered a red flag for women to have too much excess body fat.  Three out of 4 obese or overweight women have type 2 diabetes.

So, if you want to make sure that you are less at risk for diabetes, lose some weight. Work on a good diet and regular exercise to achieve your ideal weight.

 

Now, you might be saying that you’re not the type who likes to workout. If all you do is watch TV or sit down in front of your computer and work, you need to change something. Physical activity is very important if you want to avoid type 2 diabetes. When you do aerobic exercises, it helps to regulate your blood sugar levels. It also keeps your heart healthy and maintains the proper function of your brain. That is why, physical activity is a wonder cure for many diseases including diabetes.

 

Smoking and drinking alcohol can also increase your risk for type 2 diabetes. Moderate alcohol drinking may actually reduce the risk but too much alcohol can cause pancreatitis. As a result, a person is not able to secrete insulin and can end up with diabetes. So, be sure to limit to alcohol drinks to just 1 per day for women and only 2 per day for men. Smoking, on the other hand, increases blood sugar levels. So, avoid smoking tobacco or cigarettes.

 

Doctors today are saying that medication should not be your first option to prevent or treat diabetes. You need to realize that your lifestyle makes a big difference in disease prevention and treatment. Eat a healthy diet and engage in regular exercise to live healthy. Studies have already proven these to be the best way to keep diabetes and its complexities at bay.
