FRANGULA (Rhamnus frangula) – A HERBAL MEDICINE

It is one of the most powerful known drainer in herbal therapy, its most important action being the laxative-purgation one, the intensity being given by the dose. Because of its drainer effect it is used in an impressive list of diseases caused by slow poisoning of the body and the disruption of natural processes disposal. The frangula  is both effective in allergic and auto-immune ones, in treating intestinal parasitosis and severe dermatoses, hemorrhoids and cancerous disease. It’s also a redoubtable plant when used in diet.

ACTIONS

 INTERNAL: laxative (doses -small-medium: 1-3 grams per day), purgative -drastic (high doses: over 4 grams per day),  cholagogue -good (stimulates the bile secretion), choleretic (stimulates the gallbladder contraction and the bile evacuation in intestine), increases intestinal peristalsis.

INDICATIONS

 INTERNAL: – acute and chronic constipation – decoction – giardia, intestinal worms – is given as a powder, in combination with wormwood (Artemisia absinthum) and pyrethrum (Pyrethrum cinerariaefolium). – lazy gall – skin diseases associated with constipation (acne, allergic eczema, train infections, psoriasis) – hemorrhoids, varicose veins – rheumatism – fattening, obesity – laden aspect of the skin, especially of the face skin – headache, migraine accompanied by constipation – powder. – adjuvant in cancer disease (when accompanied by constipation) in allergy and auto-immune diseases, in hepatitis (including viral forms) and post-liver sequelae.

PREPARATION AND ADMINISTRATION

The powder (produced by fine grinding with the electric coffee grinder) – take half a teaspoon (under the tongue for 10-15 minutes) then swallow it with water. Usually the frangula is combined in equal proportions with powdered fennel (Foeniculum vulgare) against bloating and mallow (Malva off.) to not irritate the colon.

The treatment is given 1-2 times per day on an empty stomach.

Combined decoction – 1 teaspoon of frangula powder, 1 teaspoon of comfrey root powder and a pinch of cloves, let it soak in half a cup of water over night, then filter it. The remaining plant after filtration is boiled for 10 minutes and then allowed to cool and filtered. Combine the macerated with the cooled decoction. Drink 1-2 cups per day.

PRECAUTIONS: The classic frangula decoction without prior cold maceration is very irritating to the stomach and colon and often give bloating and violent abdominal cramps. For this reason it is extremely important: 1. to use as a powder or combined decoction. 2. combine it with emollient and carminative plants mentioned above.

CONTRAINDICATIONS: diarrhea, chronic diarrhea, extremely irritable colon, recent colon or anorectal area surgery.

NOTES: – to constipation treatment, particularly in sedentary individuals with “lazy” digestion is very useful the frangula association with bitter plants, which will amplify more its effect and contribute to ease the intestine and digestive of toxins. Bitter plants which combines well with frangula are:

artichokes (Cinar scolymus), gentian (Gentiana lutea), centaury (Centaurium umbellatum). This combination is extremely valuable in the treatment of hepatitis, cirrhosis, diseases of the gallbladder, protozoan Giardia lambria infections. – skin diseases, cancer, rheumatism, gout – the detoxification effect will be more amplified by the addition of depurative plants such as pansy (Viola tricolor), elderflower, fennel seeds.
