Foods That You Think are Healthy But Aren’t

If you like eating wraps, veggie burgers, couscous, taco salad and gluten-free bread because you think they are healthy, think again. Read on to find out why these 5 foods are not as diet-friendly as you think.

What makes these foods not so healthy?

They really don’t have as much real vegetables

1. Veggie Burgers

Veggie burgers seem to be a healthy choice with the word “veggie” attached to its name. This type of burger could be a very healthy option if only there were more vegetables in it. The problem is that most commercially prepared veggie burgers have more fillers than veggies. If you’re buying the patties, check the list of ingredients and see if a vegetable is listed as the first item. Check also the nutrition information if each patty has no more than 7 grams of protein and 150 calories. If it has more than 10 grams of protein, most likely it has less real veggies and more wheat gluten or soy protein.

2. Wraps

Wraps are thin so you may have thought that they are healthy for you. Well, you thought wrong. One thin wrap can feed two persons depending on the size. The wrap alone can have as much as 300 calories and they are usually made from refined grains, so they’re short of healthy dietary fiber. What about the green spinach wraps, they must be healthy. Look again at the list of ingredients and you’ll see that you’re not really getting a good deal of spinach at all.

They have more fat, more refined grains and more calories

3. Couscous

With a popular reputation as a healthy food among vegetarians, you might be giving couscous more credit than you should. The main ingredient of couscous is semolina flour and just one-third cup of this gives 230 calories. If you want to eat healthy, choose the whole-wheat version of couscous or eat quinoa instead.

4. Taco Salad

Taco salad, a Mexican restaurant favorite, looks healthy because it is a salad and has lettuce. But there are several reasons why this menu item is not good for dieters. The tortilla shells of taco salads are deep fried. Then, these are filled with ground beef, guacamole and sour cream. Do you see what makes this food high calorie and high fat? I haven’t mentioned that salad dressings are also about 100% fat. Be sure to just order this on the side, so your taco salad will not be drenched in the salad dressing.

5. Gluten-Free Bread

Gluten-free products are not meant to be eaten by everyone. These are prepared for people who are gluten intolerant and cannot eat wheat and other whole-grain products. Gluten-free bread does not have some key nutrients such as fiber and the B vitamins. Moreover, they are produced with refined grains, sugar and sodium to taste better. If you really need to go gluten-free, choose products made with brown rice flour or other whole grains.
