As a basic information, you should know that substances have pH values which indicate whether they are acidic or alkaline. Acidic pH ranges from 1 to 5 while alkaline pH is 6 and above.

Alkaline water that is considered high quality has a pH level of 9 and over. The higher the pH value of the water, the better it is for the body. The reason for this is the belief of researchers that it can benefit consumers in several ways.

Experts believe that it can neutralize the acidity in the bloodstream, which is important in preventing many health conditions. It also increases the body’s efficiency in absorbing nutrients and boosts metabolism. It appears to slow down the aging process and diseases like colon cancer.

There is not enough evidence though that ionized water is effective, in particular, for addressing the problems of bone loss and arthritis. It’s worth mentioning as well that drinking ionized water does not present any report of side effects.

Many celebrities promote the benefit of drinking alkaline water. That is probably the reason why it has become really popular. People who are overly acidic could benefit from drinking alkaline water. It can help restore the pH balance in the body cells. It can also serve as an antioxidant as the water’s free electrons can be donated to free radicals and neutralize them.

But for people who may be thinking of taking alkaline water in relation to certain health conditions, it is recommended to ask your doctor first for some advice. It might be help to not just focus on alkaline water but on an alkaline diet. An alkaline diet promotes eating foods and drinking beverages that can increase your body’s pH.

Some of the foods that are said to be alkaline include lemons, watermelon, spinach, asparagus, mango, papaya, grapes, pineapple, garlic and bananas.

Where to Get Alkaline Water

Natural alkaline water may be obtained from streams and waterfalls. But alkaline water that is often packaged and sold in the market is artificially manufactured through electrolysis. Some brands have added vitamins and minerals.

It is also possible to make your own alkaline water by using water ionizer machines. This kind of machine filters your plain tap water from contaminants and makes ionized water with lots of hydrogen levels. It’s a very user-friendly machine but it is a bit pricey. Consider it as a health investment that will save you money in the long run.

An easier and cheaper way of making your own alkaline water is to use additives. You can use baking soda (1/8 tablespoon) and add to a glass of water. Or you can slice one lemon and soak the lemon slices in a pitcher of water. You can drink this after 8 to 12 hours.
