Federal
Tourism Strategy a Reality
|
 |
- excerpted from TIAC Talk - October 6, 2011
The
Federal Tourism Strategy is now a reality. Promised by Prime
Minister Stephen Harper in June of 2009 and on page 17 of
the Conservative Party's platform document in the most recent
election, the Strategy was launched by Minister Bernier on
October 6 in three announcements across the country.
"This whole-of-government approach to tourism will provide a new direction for
the federal government to work with the industry to help
spur tourism growth and create jobs," says David Goldstein,
President and CEO of TIAC. "The Strategy demonstrates that
the tourism sector is a priority economic sector for this
government."
TIAC looks forward to continuing to work with Minister Bernier, and all of the
officials at the departments and agencies in order to make
the FTS a success for TIAC members. The announcement of this
Strategy is one of a number of positive initiatives announced
in recent months, and demonstrates that momentum is building
for tourism in Ottawa. It also aligns with TIAC's stated
priorities for tourism growth of Marketing, Access and Product
(M.A.P.).
Among the 30 initiatives included in the Federal Tourism Strategy are:
- The creation of an Inter-departmental
Policy Group for Tourism
- Formalized tourism industry engagement
- Tourism Business website
- Tourism Research
- Tourism Annual Report
- Facilitating Ease of Access
- Increasing Awareness of Canada
- Encouraging Development and Investment in Tourism Assets and products
- Fostering an Adequate Supply of Human Resources

Unveils Finalists for 2011 Canadian Tourism Awards
|
 |
| The
Tourism Industry Association of Canada, on October
12, announced the finalists for the 2011 Canadian
Tourism Awards, presented by The Toronto Star. Forty-three
finalists were named in 14 award categories, including
Cliffwalk at Capilano Suspension Bridge for Deloitte
Innovator of the Year, and Angel Destinations in
West Vancouver for the Traveller Experience Award.
The Canadian Tourism Awards were established in 2003 to recognize success, leadership
and innovation in Canada's tourism industry, and
to honour those people, places, organizations and
events that have gone above and beyond to offer superior
visitor experiences to travelers in Canada.
The Canadian Tourism Awards will be presented at
a gala dinner in Ottawa on November 24, 2011 at the
Chateau Laurier. Showcasing the nation's best tourism
products, services and experiences, the awards gala
has become an annual highlight of The Tourism Congress,
TIAC's annual convention.

|
This year's BC Tourism Industry Conference (TIC) will include a keynote address
from the Premier of British Columbia, the Honourable Christy
Clark. The Premier is the chief architect of a bold Jobs
Plan for BC that includes a strategic focus on tourism, international

Media Report
As the rain washes away the final reminders of summer, the media relations department
at VCM switches gears from the summer frenzy to a time of
thoughtful, proactive initiatives. After attending GoMedia
Marketplace in September, Andrea has been in contact with
over 50 journalists from outlets such as CNN, Matador Networks,
National Geographic and The Korea Times. She is preparing
press trips for Winter 2012 and Summer 2013 to get some great
coverage throughout the region!
Currently,
a Travel Classics post-FAM is touring through the Sunshine
Coast and has been
through
the Sea to Sky Country earlier this week. Top North American
journalists are attending this FAM and is sure to garner
the region some great reviews.
As
one of Andrea’s upcoming initiatives, she is looking for
each community to provide
a ‘signature’
winter and summer experience. This information will go
into a VCM press kit to be distributed at upcoming media
events.
Your submissions can be an outdoor activity, a festival,
a cultural attraction – anything! Please make your submissions
before November 18th.
For more information about Vancouver, Coast & Mountains media activities please
contact Andrea at andrea@vcmbc.com or 604.484.5361.
