PDMO Task Force Update
|
 |
Dear Industry Colleagues,
The
PDMO Task Force would like to thank all of you who have
taken the time to attend our PDMO Task Force Industry Engagement
Sessions these past three weeks. We really appreciated
your active participation and the very frank discussions.
We ask you please to continue to share our communiqués
and your experience should you have attended one or more
of our sessions to ensure your members or stakeholders
in Tourism are kept up to date and informed as to our progress.
The communication piece with industry is of critical importance
- this process is meant to be inclusive - yet we need you
to share the message and provide questions and feedback
to us directly. And, we thank you for you doing your part.
At these meetings:
The members of the Task Force received extremely valuable industry feedback.
We've continued to refine our approach based on that feedback. For those of
you who attended more than one session, you will have seen that progression.
We seem to have broad agreement on the proposed principles for the PDMO model
(we now have at least 42 letters of support from DMO's, BC Tourism Regions,
sector associations and businesses, with more coming in each day). This is
a great step forward for this critical initiative and for the Tourism industry
as a whole. Broad industry support is evidenced through the number of stakeholders
represented by the associations and businesses who have evidenced their support
in such a definitive way.
For
those of you at the BC Tourism Industry Conference, you
will have noticed that both the Premier and Minister Bell
spoke about a provincial DMO. We remain confident that
if we can develop and maintain broad industry support,
we have a good chance to see a new PDMO in BC, which will
ensure we uphold the principles and attributes you see
as key to the PDMO success.
Over the next two weeks, we will continue to meet with key groups such as the
BC Chamber of Commerce (which has standing policy on this issue) and we'll
continue to develop more detail in areas where we know we will be questioned
by government. Some of you have volunteered to help us with next steps, and
we will be taking you up on those kind offers. We hope to have an initial meeting
with government in mid- late November. We will keep you posted.
Some of you have asked if we will be coming back to industry one more time
with all of the final details before we meet with government. We've talked
about that as a group, and will probably not be in a position to do that, not
only because of timing but because of the sensitive nature of the work. As
you can imagine, we will - we hope - be entering into some sensitive negotiations
with government, through and with the TIABC Board, which have a range of implications.
Although we are going to be working collaboratively with government on this
process, the model we go in with initially may not necessarily be what we come
out with after a series of negotiations. Therefore,
we don't want to derail these discussions by having a document out there that
is not finalized. We are asking for your trust in our ability as a Task Force,
working with the new TIABC Board, to represent you based on the feedback you
have provided to us.
In the interim, we ask that you remain openly supportive of our efforts to
build a new PDMO for the province. More than ever, we need industry to continue
to rally around this if we are to succeed.
If
you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact any
one of us:

Canada earns No. 1 country brand in the world ... AGAIN! |
|
| |
For the second year in a row, Canada has been named the No.1 most powerful country
brand in the world by FutureBrand, a leading international brand and design consultancy. Canada holds its ground
against its competitors as it extends the global reach
of its tourism brand. At
the 32nd annual World Travel Market (WTM) in London, England, FutureBrand announced that Canada keeps the top spot
in its 2011 Country Brand Index (CBI), the most comprehensive global study of how travellers perceive countries
around the world. The rankings are based on a global sample
of online interviews of savvy leisure and business travellers.
FutureBrand's 2010 CBI assessed 110 countries through online
interviews with 3,400 travellers from 13 countries, eight
of which were markets where the Canadian Tourism Commission (CTC) invests. According
to the CBI, the most important factors that truly differentiate
a nation's brand are its associations and attributes: the
qualities that people think of when they hear a country's
name, read or see images of a location, or plan a business
or leisure trip. After
the CTC launched Canada's revitalized tourism brand "Canada. Keep Exploring" six years ago, the country leapfrogged on FutureBrand's CBI ranking from 12th
place in 2006 to 6th place in 2007, and jumped again to
the No.2 spot in 2008 and 2009, and finally clinched the
top spot for the first time last year following the 2010
Winter Games. Canada keeps the coveted premier spot this
year, being recognized as the most powerful, engaging and
vibrant country brand in an intensely competitive international
tourism marketplace. The
full report is available on the FutureBrand website at www.futurebrand.com
