Tourism
on the upswing?
|
 |
Was April 2011 the turn around month? Let's
hope so!
Recently
released stats from the Research, Planning & Evaluation team at the Ministry of Jobs, Tourism & Innovation show provincial occupancy up 1.1%, average daily room rate up 1.0%,
passengers at YVR up 0.5%. OK, they're not huge numbers,
but we have been watching for positive change, and, just
maybe,
this is the beginning. Anecdotal reports from operators in
our region suggest future bookings for this year and 2012
are higher than recent years. That's encouraging!
Within
the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains
region in April, hotel occupancy is up 2.2% in Vancouver,
2.7% in Whistler. The average rate is up 2.8% in Vancouver
too. Hopefully, these positive results
are duplicated throughout the region.
As
we enter into the summer season, our marketing strategies
highlight the reasons visitors
need to stay longer and enjoy the myriad of experience. Central
to all our activities is 604Pulse.com,
updated almost daily with things to see and do throughout
the region. "Farm to Table" continues to be a driver of visitation, notably in Mighty Fraser Valley with
their Circle Farm Tour and, more recently, Handpicked in
the Valley. Visitors love the arts, culture and heritage
in our region, and can spend days exploring the Sunshine
Coast artisans of the Coast Cultural Alliance. Outdoor enthusiasts
love to explore the Sea to Sky highway, all the way up to
Lillooet, and complete the Coast Mountain Circle Route down
the Mighty
Fraser Canyon.
In Metro Vancouver (where
visitors really should spend a night in every community!),
exploring the neighborhoods from North Vancouver to White
Rock, and from West Vancouver to the Tri-cities and Surrey
would certainly extend their stay by days!
So
when we look at the stats at the end of the summer,
let's hope we
see larger increases
than in April, our business owners have more money in their
bank accounts and our communities have generated more tax
income from visitors.
Enjoy your summer!

Report
on Media Activities
|
 |
| June
has been a busy month for our newest addition Andrea
Visscher. In her first few weeks here she attended
a Tourism BC media dinner in Calgary to meet with
travel journalists from across the Rockies. The following
weekend she attended the Travel Blog Exchange Conference
(TBEX) held at the Vancouvr Convention Center. She
met bloggers from all across North America and participated
in
various
workshops including, 'How to Create the Perfect Pitch',
and 'ROI - Tools for Measuring Success'. Over 450
travel bloggers were in attendance. The two day event
also
included lectures from a number of guest speakers.
From Evelyn Hannon, of Journeywoman to Sean Keener from
BootsnAll - each sharing their challenges and successes
in the blogosphere. TBEX provided a great opportunity
for Andrea to meet with international media and share
with them the beauty and experiences that make the
Vancouver, Coast & Mountains region unique.
We
also had a journalist from HOG Magazine tour the
Coast Mountain Circle Route by motorcycle. He was
able to experience
the different scenery and terrain and see that
anything
really is possible within the region. His feedback
upon leaving was that he appreciated the natural
beauty and rich history of our area. We will look
forward to reading his article when it comes out.
Andrea
also
participated in a few FAM tours to experience
Mighty Fraser
Country and the Sunshine Coast. All in all
- we've kept this girl running!
