New directions in tourism, hospitality & leisure

How has global economic volatility affected Canada’s tourism industry? Are Canadians heading south of the border to save money on flights? Gain insight into tourism industry trends in Deloitte’s winter edition of Navigate.

Navigate is a semi-annual publication developed in association with the Tourism Industry Association of Canada which examines travel intentions for the coming year. This year, we further explore the impact of U.S. border airports and how a growing number of Canadians are choosing to fly out of the U.S. to save money. We also profile one of Europe’s top tourist destinations: Turkey.

Highlights from this report:

  • Domestic travel outlook remains relatively flat - More Canadians than last year are as likely to travel within Canada over the coming 12 months
  • Close to half of respondents who travel for business have participated in blended travel; 61% of business travellers are somewhat/very likely to bring a friend along
  • 26% of respondents stated that they had crossed the U.S. border to save money on a flight by flying out of a U.S. airport; by doing so, they saved an average of close to $300
  • Turkey is now in the top 10 amongst global tourism arrivals, ranking seventh in the world in 2010
