COTA
Hits "Reset" at BC Tourism Leaders Summit
|
 |
| At 2nd Annual BC Tourism Leaders' Summit in Nanaimo, tourism leaders from around
the province came to together to discuss how tourism
can play an event great role in BC's economy. At the two-day summit and
accompanying AGM, members of the association voted for
a new name and bylaws. The association will now be called
the Tourism Industry Association of BC (TIABC), reflecting
the growing number of tourism businesses that have joined
the association in recent years. Among other topics, Summit
participants discussed a 'reset' plan for the organization
that included: growing its membership, changing bylaws
to increase the number of directors on the board, increasing
the credibility of its policy development, improving
communications, solidifying its business model and taking
new steps in government relations. Members provided significant
feedback on ways to strengthen the plan, and endorsed
key board recommendations that will help the association
re-establish its role as the 'voice of the tourism industry.' Joined by the Honourable Pat
Bell, Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Innovation, delegates
heard the minister announce his support for a strong
tourism sector association and his commitment to work
with TIABC to grow the sector. Minister Bell also spoke
to TIABC members about government's plans to address
key sector concerns, and made a commitment to work with
TIABC in developing a new 'industry-driven' approach
to tourism marketing, enhancing land tenure security,
and improving land use planning to minimize conflicts
and enhance tourism experiences. As part of its new 'reset'
plan, TIABC will work with government on a focused approach
to growth with a three-point policy platform that focuses
on effective marketing, improving access and enhancing
the business environment for tourism. The official TIABC press release
can be found here. For more information about
the Tourism Industry Association of BC please visit www.cotabc.com.

Media

Lisa
and Jennifer recently returned from Canada Media
Marketplace in New York, where they met with
more than 40 American travel writers at desk side

More than a dozen of the scheduled marketplace

AMTRAK Train Day in Portland in early May. As
always please keep VCM staff up-to-date with
any new or
interesting products and story ideas. As
Lisa is saying farewell to Vancouver, Coast & Mountains
at the end of the month, please send all
media inquiries to Jennifer Rhyne at jennifer@vcmbc.com. Upcoming Media Events

Promote
Workplace Health & Safety
|
|
 |
|
|
North
America Occupational Safety & Health (NAOSH) Week is May 1-7, 2011. It is an excellent opportunity to focus,
reinforce and strengthen commitment to occupational
heath and safety, therefore preventing injury and
illness in the workplace. Between 2000 and 2009, 1,637,470 people were injured or became ill on the job
in BC. Within the four main sectors of the BC tourism
industry (hotels, ski hills, restaurants and pubs,
bars, lounges and nightclubs), 3,300 workplace
injuries were reported in 2009 - that is 3,300
too many. Why should you take part in NAOSH Week activities? Participation and
involvement in NAOSH Week has been shown to:
- Improve
attitudes towards safety.
- Increase the understanding of the importance of
occupational health & safety.
- Foster a safety-minded culture.
- Assist in team-building, and improve communication
between employees, safety committees
and safety professionals.
The success of NAOSH
Week is rooted in a community-based approach. Across
the country, NAOSH Week events and activities are
coordinated by local, provincial and/or regional
committees that are comprised primarily of volunteers,
who share a focus and vision of safer workplaces
and communities. Partnerships with government, businesses,
suppliers, CSSE Chapters, community health organizations
and other safety groups provide the support, resources
and network necessary to manage the NAOSH Week plans. Go2
has some resources to get you started, as well
as a contest
to win a
great prize. For more information about Go2 please visit www.go2hr.ca.
