Special Olympics edition
Just 3 days to go and Olympic fever has definitely taken over
Vancouver, Coast & Mountains Tourism Region! Apart from the
staff’s personal attempts to get out and see as many Olympic
related activities as possible, VCM staff are also involved in
the games on a professional level. The following is a quick round
up of how Vancouver, Coast & Mountains is being represented
during the 2010 Olympic Games. For more information about any of

Vancouver
2010 Olympic Torch Relay
Kayla Seib has been working for months to
get ready for her Olympic debut with the torch relay! Kayla is currently
out in the region
accompanying Chris Wheeler, Tourism BC’s torch reporter as
he records video blogs documenting the communities that the torch
goes through. Vancouver, Coast & Mountains involvement started
with our recommendations of unique and interesting activities along
the relay course. Once the final filming decisions were made, Kayla
was responsible for all travel and shooting logistics.

Interview
for German Television
On Wednesday, February 10, Kevan will
be hosting a German television network at the VCM offices.
Kevan will be interviewed by reporter Birgit Nössing
about what tourism industry experts expect from the games.
The stories produced will be shown during the Olympics
on a nationwide broadcasting network, called Pro Sieben
Sat.1 Television. The viewing market includes Germany,
Austria, Switzerland and parts of Northern Italy. As
many of you have seen, the deck of the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains
offices is a perfect venue for an interview as our view
takes in the athletes village, BC Place, downtown Vancouver
and the North Shore Mountains. Cross your fingers for
sunshine!

A
Taste of Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast
Vancouver, Coast & Mountains and the Sunshine Coast are participating
in a special media event on Thursday, February 11, the night prior to
the opening ceremonies of the games. This event is themed “Taste
of Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast” and is intended to
WOW guests with the destinations excellence in wine, cuisine and local
agricultural
product such as: ciders, hand-crafted beers, seafood, and other enticing
locally produced products. The event will be a high energy media-engagement
initiative targeting qualified media representatives that will tell the
exciting story of the opportunities to Live, Work, Play and Invest in
the Vancouver Island and Sunshine Coast regions.

BC
Street at the Richmond O Zone
Shawna Leung and Alicia Cenci have been working diligently over the past
few weeks to pull together Vancouver, Coast & Mountains’ presence
on BC Street, an interactive pavilion and showcase of the region’s
communities. Located at the O Zone, the largest official celebration
site for the 2010 Games, BC Street is designed to give visitors a glimpse
of the region’s beautiful destinations by highlighting some of
the best attractions, festivals, arts, culture and history in a one block
radius.
At the Vancouver, Coast & Mountains pavilion you can have
your photo taken and send a virtual postcard or video to friends
and family back home. Come in and pin where you are from on our
world map to receive a free souvenir pin. Sample some products
of the Fraser Valley with free tastings of local wine, cheese,
honey, hazelnuts and coffee. Enjoy various artists in action and
performers from the Sunshine Coast. Ride a mechanical bull, try
out the golf swing simulation or enjoy a geo-caching treasure hunt
within the pavilion for great prizes!
Community Partners involved in BC Street include: Tourism Harrison,
Tourism Langley, Tourism Abbotsford, Sunshine Coast Tourism, Gold
Country Tourism, Tourism Surrey, Tourism White Rock.
BC Street, located at Richmond’s City Hall, will be open
daily during the Games, February 12 to 28, 3:00pm – 11:00
pm on weekdays and 12:00pm – 11:00pm on weekends. Richmond
O Zone is accessible via the Canada Line. For more information

Society
of Economic Development of British Columbia (SDECB)
The
Society of Economic Development of British-Columbia (SDECB), in
collaboration
with Small Business, Technology, Economic Development has invited
Kevan to a business reception, at the BC Showcase space in
Robson Square, to celebrate 2010 Canadian Francophonie Day during
the Winter Olympic Games. Kevan will attend and will be joined
by Alicia Cenci, Vancouver, Coast & Mountains new intern
student. As Alicia is from France, we're sure that she'll be
able to translate much of the program for Kevan!

Agri-Tourism
Event
VCM has been invited to attend an Agri-Tourism Event on Sunday, February
14. Co-hosted by the BC Ministry of Agriculture & Lands and the BC
Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts, the primary objective of this
event is to highlight the diversity of landscape, people and food that
Canada has here in BC to media, through a showcase that takes our international
and local guests on a culinary tour of the six tourism regions of the
province. The event will use food /wine tastings and farmer/vintner stories
to generate interest in BC food and the places where they are grown and
processed. The overall theme of the event will focus on welcoming the
world to discover the wonderful diversity of our food products and “meet
the makers” while also highlighting our wonderfully diverse landscape
that is tended with the great pride and skill of our diverse people.
Kevan will be in attendance for Vancouver, Coast & Mountains and
is looking forward to getting an opportunity to interact with media from
around the world.

Night
Vancouver, Coast & Mountains will be joining Tourism British Columbia
and the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the Arts at BC Night on February
16 at the BC – Canada Pavilion. This by-invitation-only event will
be a networking opportunity for tourism industry leaders, national and
international investors, media and Olympic delegates. |

2010 Legacies
Now's Olympic & Paralympic Legacies Symposium
Vancouver, Coast & Mountains
has been invited by 2010 Legacies Now to participate in their Olympic
and Paralympic Legacies Symposium
on Friday, February 19. The symposium will feature a panel of informative
and inspirational speakers who will explore the value of legacy
planning
and development in
bidding for, planning and hosting of the Olympic and Paralympic
Games. Kevan Ridgway will attend, and will be joined by representatives
from the Province of British Columbia, International Olympic
Committee, Vancouver Organizing Committee for the 2010 Winter Games,
and other
past and future Games' Olympic Organizing Committees as they
discuss the incredible legacy opportunities the Games present. |

Celebrate
Squamish & Pemberton at Whistler Canada Olympic House
VCM will join in celebrating Squamish and Pemberton at Whistler Canada
Olympic House on Tuesday, February 23. The overall concept of the event
is to celebrate the amazing investment opportunities availalbe in the Sea
to Sky communities of Squamish and Pemberton. Attendees will hear from
community leaders and connect with Provincial policy-makers and local businesses
representing key industry sectors such as: Development; Education & Technology;
Recreation & Tourism; Marine; Agriculture and Transportation. |
