COTA
Member Update
COUNCIL MEETING OVERVIEW
COTA held a Council meeting on October 29, 2009 to solicit member
input to achieve unambiguous direction around the next steps for
the September 2, 2009 Council meeting recommendations with regard
to:
- Dissolution of Tourism BC and COTA's role vis-à-vis
provincial-level marketing initiatives.
- Community and regional marketing system redesign post-Hotel
Room Tax / Tourism BC.
- Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) - impacts
on tourism and mitigation strategy.
The October 29 Council meeting was preceded by a four-hour
strategic planning session relating to HST, Tourism BC's
dissolution, and
the community/regional marketing system redesign. The
day was facilitated by Dr. Nancy Arsenault and a panel of
tourism
experts
from around
the province, and is complementary to planning processes
undertaken by the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and the
Arts, as well as
the Ministry of Finance.
Notes from this session will be made available to COTA
members in the coming days.
Members of the COTA Board will be meeting with Finance
Minister Hansen on November 10, 2009 to discuss the above
issues,
with particular emphasis on HST impacts and mitigation.
COTA will
keep its members
apprised of the outcomes of this meeting. To read the complete COTA update, please click here.

Study
Reveals the ROI of Business Travel
Is your boss
asking you to show the ROI of any business trip you take - including
attending the SYTA
Summit
and Annual Conference?
A new study by Oxford Economics can help you sell the value of
meetings to your bosses, clients and staff. The study found that
for every dollar invested in business travel, businesses experience
an average of $12.50 in increased revenue and $3.80 in new profits.
The Oxford Economics study is the first to successfully measure
the ROI of business travel. When companies reduce their travel
budgets, there are negative consequences, which can now be quantified
in terms of lost revenue and profit growth and of giving the competition
a distinct advantage. The average business in the U.S. would forfeit
17% of its profits in the first year of eliminating business travel
and it would take more than three years for profits to recover.
Executives and business travelers surveyed estimated that 28% of
their current business would be lost without in-person meetings.
Roughly 40% of prospective customers are converted to new customers
with an in-person meeting, compared to 16% without such a meeting.

Competing
Beyond Price - Understanding what it takes
for Canadian tourism to successfully compete.
According to the World Economic Forum, Canada has become one of
the world’s most expensive travel destinations. The appreciating
Canadian dollar and Canada’s high structural transportation
costs are limiting Canada’s ability to remain competitive
in the global tourism marketplace. In a power point presentation
shown at the 2009
TIAC
Leadership
Summit
by
Ryan
Brain of Deloitte, Mr. Brain shared some new primary
research performed
by Deloitte
that
considers
how we
can
address these current realities and better compete for the international
traveller’s dollar. Click
