Aging does a lot of different things to your body, one of the most noticeable differences being your decreased ability to engage in physical activity. As you get older your heart rate declines, and that mean that your body can’t pump blood and oxygen to the required places as efficiently as it used to. Therefore, during really intense physical activity, your body can’t keep up, your muscles get tired quicker, and you won’t be able to go for as long as you used to be able to. Aging also means suffering from muscle mass reductions, which means that you just can’t do as much as you used to. Another thing that happens with age is that both your tendons and ligaments get shorter and stiffer, and that will decrease your range of motion as well as your flexibility. Also, old age is often accompanied by various joint, bone, and nerve problems too.
This does however not mean that you can’t exercise in your old age, and you surely don’t have to accept the fact that your body is in decline, at least not without putting up a fight. The fact of the matter is that with old age, your body doesn’t decline in fitness as much because of the age itself, than because of the fact that older people get less exercise. Working out regularly will actually delay the effects of aging, and can also help reverse any signs of aging that your body is experiencing. As you are aging the benefits of regular exercise become more and more apparent. No matter how old you are, it’s never too late to starts exercising, and actually, not exercising can lead to some very troublesome issues.
Keep in mind that it is important to choose exercises that are not too intense, that are just right for you, and that won’t cause any serious damage to your aging body. It’s really important to pay close attention to what your body is telling you, and to choose exercises that suit your fitness level the most. Know Your Limits & See The Warning Signs
Before you begin a workout routine in your old age it’s very important to see your medical care provider or some kind of doctor to gauge if you are ready for physical activity, and to find out just how much you should do, especially so if you already have pre-existing health conditions that need to be taken into consideration. If you have any conditions that relate to your heart or lungs, or if you are on any medication for your heart or high blood pressure, then you definitely need to mention that to your doctor and take it into account. You need to see a doctor in order to find out if you have any health conditions that may affect your exercise routine and just exactly what you can do, and if you already have any conditions such as diabetes or hypoglycaemia, they definitely need to be taken into account as well. When you exercise in your old age, you should never go hard enough to run out of breath or find yourself unable to talk due to heavy breathing. That being said, you should be able to say short sentences during exercise, but not being able to hold a whole conversation is normal. Also, if you experience any severe joint, bone, or muscle pains, you should also consider decreasing your workout, not to mention that you should talk to a doctor about it too.
