The Beauty Of Adjustable Dumbbells. Part III
For Your Forearms
There aren’t that many exercises you can do with dumbbells to train your forearm muscles, but the ones that do exist are more than enough to get the job done. Exercises you can do with dumbbells to train your forearms include the wrist curls and the palm down wrist curl.
What To Look Out For When Buying Adjustable Dumbbells
There are quite a few different things that you will want to consider when buying your next pair of adjustable dumbbells so let’s quickly go through those.
What They’re Made Of
One of the things that you want to look out for when buying adjustable dumbbells is what material they are made of. The material that they are made of will more or less dictate how high the quality of the dumbbells is.
Something you want to look for is that the adjustable dumbbells are made out of metal and the same goes for the weighted plates. You don’t want to dumbbells that are made out of rubber, plastic, or other synthetic materials. The more metal is on these things the better. Of course there are some exceptions, like the handle for example, but we will get to that later.
The next thing that you should look out for when making your purchase is what size the dumbbells are. If you are getting adjustable dumbbells it’s pretty like that you are getting them in part because they save space.
Now there are some pretty big adjustable dumbbells out there that will take up a fair amount of space, especially when the stand is involved. The point of you having them is to save space so you will want to get a smaller pair that is compact and can be stored is a small corner or closet.
The Locking Mechanism
Another thing you need to take into consideration when getting adjustable dumbbells is what kind of locking mechanism they have. Different models of these dumbbells will have various locking mechanisms. The locking mechanism is the way in which you can adjust the weights in order to be lighter or heavier.
This mechanism locks the weight plates into place to give you the appropriate weight for any workout routine. Some have a bunch of pegs, some have a locking dial, some have magnets, and some have clicker mechanisms too.
Now, there isn’t really a clear choice here and most of this choice kind of comes down to personal preference. Something to keep in mind is if the mechanism is easily adjusted. You don’t want a precarious mechanism that is going to take forever to change the weight you want to lift. That is going to eat up valuable time and it’s going to be a nuisance too.
What you do need to look out for is that the weight plates are locked tightly into place. If the locking mechanism is not tight and secure, the plates will move around, clatter, throw off your balance, and may even fall off of the dumbbells. The mechanism needs to lock the plates into place to provide you with a well-balanced weight lifting workout that doesn’t let the plates move back and forth.
Their Weight Limit
Perhaps the most important thing to look out for before purchasing adjustable dumbbells is what their minimum and maximum weight limit is. There are various models of these things and they’re not all the same.
Some start at 2.5, 5, or 10 pounds and some go up to 25, 40, 50, or even 75 pounds. You need to get a pair that fits your needs. If you are a beginner we would recommend getting an intermediate set that starts at 5 pounds and goes up to 50.
You don’t want to get a pair of adjustable dumbbells that start off being too heavy or else you won’t be able to do half of the exercises you want to do. If they don’t go up high enough in weight you will have to buy a different pair or some extra dumbbells and you definitely don’t want to do that.
