The 5 Longest Foot Races On Planet Earth
We all know that running is great for your body for a great number of different reasons. Things like heart and lung health, bone health, muscle health, balance, stamina, weight loss, and overall good health are all great benefits that all come along with running on a regular basis. There are of course people who take running very seriously and those are the ones that will run marathons on a regular basis. Marathons are usually just over 26 miles long and they test even the most seasoned of runners. Now that is a normal marathon, an ultramarathon on the other hand is a marathon that exceeds the distance of a normal marathon by a long shot. There are some foot races out there that are completely ridiculous and can exceed several thousand miles in distance. Let’s take a quick look at some of the longest foot races that exist in the world today.
The Comrades Marathon
The Comrades Marathon takes place in South Africa and the first one was ran in 1921, meaning that this race has been around for close to 100 years now. Ever since the first race over 10,000 people have participated in The Comrades Marathon. This race is roughly 90 kilometers or 55.9 miles long and covers the hilly countryside of South Africa. South Africa can get very hot and humid, not to mention that the beating midday sun will put a real hurt on anybody who spends too much time under it. This is considered one of the hardest races in the world, but it is still nothing compared to some of the others on this list.
We’ve all seen the movie 300 so we are all quite familiar with the tenacity, strength, and outright defiance that ancient Spartans showed to their Greek and Persian overlords. This Spartan strength was then made into a marathon in which only the strongest of people could participate in. This is definitely a race only made for true Spartans! The Spartathalon is 250 kilometers or 151 miles in length and the course follows the hilly and hot terrain from Athens to Sparta. This race is actually based in history because this run was performed by the soldiers who ran from Athens to Sparta to help in the war against the Persians.
Marathon Des Sables
This race is often considered one of the hardest to grace the face of this earth and there is a good reason as to why it is considered to be so treacherous. The reason it is so hard is because it is a 151 mile or 250 kilometer long race through the Moroccan desert. The Moroccan desert can get really hot and by that we mean temperatures exceeding 120 degrees in the middle of the day. Runnign across a desert for days on end is known to be one of the most intense and bodily demanding activities that a human body can go through. All of the runners that participate in the Marathon Des Sables must wear specific shoes to stop their feet from burning and blistering, plus they must also prepare their food and hydration for the race.
The Self Transcendence Race
We are aware that many people call the Marathon Des Sables the hardest and most grueling race on earth, however if that statement was made because of the intense heat then it may have been made too soon. The Self Transcendence race takes place in June in Queens New York. The race takes place in the middle of the summer and in the middle of the city on hot pavement where temperatures can actually get pretty close to 120 degrees. This race is a staggering 3,100 miles long and it is run simply by running around a half mile long city block for 18 hours every day until they reach the target distance. What insanity!
The Trans America Foot Race
This is the longest race on planet earth at this very moment and it has been going on since 1928. This race takes place over the whole American country and is a 3,200 mile long stretch that starts in Los Angeles and ends in New York. Normally this race takes over 70 days to finish, but the world record for completion is just over 461 hours or just over 19 days.
