HAWTHORN (Crataegus monogyna) (fruits) – HELPFUL PRETTY FRUITS
It is a bush of a few meters high, which in late april – early may delights the view with its white petals rain and invites to relaxation with its soothing aroma. In September-October its explosion of vivid red fruits gives a celebration look to the hills and forest edges where usually grows. Both flowers and its fruit are a true elixir for cardiovascular diseases, the reason why it is one of the most used plants in Europe where these diseases is the number one cause of mortality. Is interesting that neither from fruits or flowers of hawthorn, which have almost identical properties, could not be isolated one active principle that can explain its therapeutic action, its substance being effective only in the natural complex represented by the plant itself. Also, the plant prepared by thermal processes (ie “tea”) is inferior to powder, combined infusion or tincture, as curative, forms of extraction that preserves better the plant properties.
INTERNAL: antifebril -medium-weak, astringent -medium (especially the fruits), calming for the nervous system –good (especially the flowers), diuretic -good, balancing the blood pressure -strong, hypotensive -gentle and effective , eliminates extrasystoles of any etiology, increases the respiratory activity, regulator of blood flow and heart rate, gradually improves cerebral circulation, sympatholytic (reduces or eliminates the effects of adrenergic nerve stimulation), cardiac tonic -strong (long-term treatments), coronary vasodilator -strong.
EXTERNAL: sedative (as baths).
INTERNAL: – heart rhythm disturbances (palpitations) – powder. Indicated in particular flowers powder, but maximum effects were seen in the use of a mixed powder of flowers and fruits. In the case of pregnant arrhythmias the treatment should be maintained 3-4 weeks after the complete disappearance of the unpleasant symptoms. For long treatments is very effective the hawthorn fruit tincture: one teaspoon four times per day, for 6 to 12 months. – hypertonic heart – combined infusion of hawthorn fruit. Drink 2-3 cups a day. Treatment lasts at least 3 months.- degeneration of the heart and coronary sclerosis in the elderly, cardiac ischemia (adjuvant) – combined infusion of fruits and flowers. Take 3 cups per day on long-term treatments. In case of massive fluid intake is contraindicated use tincture 4 teaspoons per day. – adjuvant in angina – flowers and fruits powder. Take 4 teaspoons per day on an empty stomach having adjuvant role.- arteriosclerosis – powder. very good results are obtained by combining with artichokes and plantain in equal proportions.- hypertension, labile blood pressure – a teaspoon of fruits and flowers powder is taken 4 times per day, in the course of long duration (6 months minimum). In people with a high degree of nervousness, experiencing anger bouts is recommended especially hawthorn flowers, possibly in combination with stronger calming plants: St. John’s wort, motherwort.- poor peripheral circulation, varicose veins and hemorrhoids – combined infusion.- congestive menopause disorders – combined infusion of fruits, 2 cups per day. In case of intense irritability, hot flushes during menopause, lack of emotional control, in parallel with the infusion will be used sublingually, 4 times per day, a teaspoon of flowers powder.- neurosis, anxiety in children and adolescents – combined infusion of flowers.- cellulitis adjuvant, obesity – combined infusion of fruits. Drink one cup before each meal.- overwork in elder people – powder of fruits and flowers.
OTHER INTERNAL USE: Fruits are also indicated in diseases of the throat, diarrhea, angina, albuminuria, urinary stones, leukorrhoea. It was observed a immune-stimulating effect exerted by the fruits and flowers of hawthorn, which is recommended in the treatment, in the form of powder or combined infusion, to increase the resilience to the infectious diseases.
METHOD OF ADMINISTRATION
The powder – finely ground the plant with an electric coffee grinder, then sieved through a flour sifter. Take, usually, a teaspoon 3 times per day on an empty stomach. The powder is put under the tongue for 10-15 minutes, then swallowed with water.
The combined infusion (prescription to obtain 250 ml.) – 1-2 teaspoons of hawthorn flowers or fruits is left to soak in half a cup of water from evening to morning, when is filtered; the macerate is kept, and scald the remaining powder with half a cup of hot water for 20 minutes, then allowed to cool; combine the two extracts; drink the preparation with a quarter of an hour before a meal. Dose – 3 cups per day.
